How long? 2 hours 45 mins (30 mins Warm up. 1 hour 15 mins Simple Gifts. 45 mins Symphonic Gershwin )

(I think its better if Tubas and Double basses practice separately... And take a break when you need it. Don't slack arrr! You might want to print this out?)

Cheryl:

Start - 11.45

Warm ups.

-> Long notes. F major scale. Low F to Middle F to High F. Hold for 12 counts each.

-> Tune all your valves. You should know this but anyway, if it's sharp pull out, if it's flat push in. You don't know which slide to pull for which valve? Just follow the tubes, or ask somebody.

Also, to tune:

open, tune with High and Low Bb, and F if necessary.

1st valve, tune with Eb, and if you need, Ab for reference.

2nd valve. tune with E, A for reference

4th valve. tune with C.

3rd valve, tune with Db, after you are sure that the 2nd valve is in tune.

After tuning, make sure your B natural (fingering 2+4) is in tune. It will probably be sharp, so drop your jaw and try to remember how much you have to relax to get it in tune. SIMPLE GIFTS (1 HOUR 15 MINS)Movement 1: Take note of tuning, and DYNAMICS. Prac Crescendo and Dimnuendo. (Don't spend too much time here)

Movement 2: Rmb what I took for pick up to bar 25. (It's in 2s, and make the D at 25 light and bouncy. Like throwing fishballs against the wall. Okay maybe not. But BOUNCY =) )
Bar 41. go to www.manhattanbeachmusic.com (or something) and download Simple Gifts. You will hear that all our notes just fit in very nicely with the melody. Listen out when Mr Lee takes the band, and you will know how to play that properly. But for now, just get the notes and all right.
After bar 49. Long notes. Make sure low Ab has a SOLID tone. Don't just blow air through. Focus your air. It's a note, not a random farty noise. Bar 73. TOUNGE EVERY NOTE. Tounge HARD. Accent. And FF! Follow dynamics.
BAR 79!!! Pitch every every single note. EVERYTHING MR LEE SAID DURING BAND PRAC. Every note must have weight. Start soft, crescendo into FFFFF. Last note, make sure it's HEAVY.

Movement 3: Slur all your notes properly, pitch everything. FOLLOW DYNAMICS. During band prac, FOLLOW MR LEE. The music is supposed to move, don't hold back.

Movement 4: Tuning. Take note of dynamics as well.
Bar 79. Slur. Be careful at bar 81, make sure you pitch high C. Bar 83 Pitch high F. VERY IMPT! Watch Mr Lee at Molto rit. (bar 96). He will conduct in 4s for that bar, until 99, then he will go back to 2s. WATCH. And COUNT. at bar 102 come in on time. the last three bars, make sure you tongue and separate your notes.

GERSHWIN (45 mins)Start practicing from bar 178. Get all your notes right. Start slowly first. (Remember Ms Chong said to tounge the low G. make sure sound comes out on time). Get all your notes and the rhythm right first. Take note of key signature. No flats
Then at bar 186, 5 flats. Take note, get notes right, play rhythm over and over again. Then speed up at your own pace.
Bar 208. Accent first quaver, then slur down to next.
Stop at 230. Will take yall when I'm back.





SiewYing Jasmine:

Start - 11.45

Warm up with basics. Work on bowing. Tune your notes. Don't tune just the string. Go through all your positions, make sure the markings are accurate. Tune all the important notes.
Remember B natural in rosa. Db also. Spend more time on bowing, make sure the note comes out, not just a scratchy note.

Instructions and time allocation are the same as Cheryl's, except the terminology used is not appropriate. I trust that you two know how to interpret what i mean by "tounge harder" and "slur from blah to blah" and all that into something suitable.

If for some reason (I dunno, did your instructor say anything about this piece?), yall cant play Gershwin, then go through the notes for Rosa. Tune all the notes in there, like B natural at bar 32, Db at 33. At 127, your notes have to be very very very HEAVY. Bow harder also, and rmb when Ms Chong asked yall to pull harder and all that stuff? Yeah use that sound for this part too.
